Earthquakes

What is an earthquake?
Sometimes two blocks of the Earth’s crust move along a faultline. When this happens it can cause an earthquake. The place under the Earth where the earthquake starts is called the focus. Directly above it, on the surface, is the epicentre.

How do we measure earthquakes?
Scientists use seismometers to measure earthquakes. An earthquake’s size is its magnitude, or how much energy is released during the earthquake. Scientists use the Richter Scale to say how big the earthquake was.

Why do earthquakes happen?
The Earth has four layers: the inner core, outer core, mantle and crust. The crust, which covers the Earth's surface, is divided into large blocks that are constantly moving. We call these pieces tectonic plates. The edges of the plates are called plate boundaries. The plate boundaries often get stuck, and when they finally move, it causes an earthquake. The movement releases energy in the form of seismic waves. These waves cause the ground to shake — or quake.
